My Teaching Philosophy
I believe that music is primarily a communicative phenomenon. There is a commonly heard phrase that says “music is a universal language.” This is not true; music is as varied as language is worldwide and throughout history. However, there seems to be a commonality among all different kinds of music in its power to help us communicate. Additionally, there seems to be a connection between how we use music and language in our everyday life.
This is how I approach teaching students. A music student can learn a variety of skills for a variety of different settings, depending on the circumstances of their musical interest and their previous experience in music, but I believe that in any of these circumstances, this idea of communication will be essential.
I have taught private trombone/baritone lessons to students ranging from elementary school to high school, and in these lessons I focus on teaching healthy fundamental playing techniques, efficient and effective practice habits, and thoughtful musical approaches. I am also looking to teach beginning piano lessons, as I believe these focuses can be effectively emulated across many different instruments, and I have extensive technical and musical experience with piano, as well.
